3i3s-Africa harnesses space expertise to address the energy, environmental and societal needs of the African continent — placing Africa at the heart of tomorrow’s solutions. As the African branch of the international 3i3s network (International Independent Institute for Aerospace & Satellite Solutions), alongside 3i3s-Europa and 3i3s-America, we connect space experts with non-space actors to co-create lasting value.
The space sector must open up to address humanity’s greatest challenges. Africa is not a recipient of space technology — it is a co-designer of the global space economy. 3i3s-Africa bridges space expertise with the continent’s real-world needs: energy access, environmental protection, healthcare, and education
We build bridges between space experts and potential users — institutions, companies, governments and communities — translating space technologies into concrete solutions for Africa's most pressing challenges.
We identify and nurture emerging ideas: research programmes, energy sovereignty projects, training initiatives and public-private partnerships. Our approach: understand, innovate, and scale.
Through regional conferences, think-tanks, and expert panels, we shape ecosystems that influence markets and public policy — ensuring Africa becomes a co-designer, not a late adopter, of the global space economy.
From energy sovereignty to environmental monitoring, here are some of the key initiatives 3i3s-Africa has driven or contributed to.
Manassé Bokole, President of 3i3s-Africa, delivered a keynote on the socioeconomics of Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) for Africa. Key message: Africa must stop being seen as a technology recipient and start being recognized as a co-designer of the global space-energy landscape. With 600 million Africans still without electricity and energy demand set to multiply sixfold by 2050, SBSP represents Africa's long-term stability layer.
